Modern home architecture is distinct. It draws both ardent admirers and firm detractors. Whatever your opinion of the architectural style may be, its enduring influence is undeniable.
History
Modern design embraces functionality. It’s rooted in the idea that each space should work well, and it adopts the best of contemporary materials and building techniques to do so. The architectural style contradicts the formal symmetry and ornamentation of preceding styles. It emerged from the ruins of World War I as an artistic expression of a desire to throw off the past and start anew.
Characteristics
While it continues to influence every design trend since, modern home architecture remains a distinct style in itself, and one that our Meydenbauer architecture company loves to explore.
Roof
Modern home designs feature flat or slight single pitch roofs that stand apart from their more traditional neighbors.
Layout
Typically one story, these homes relish open floor plans. The kitchen, dining area, and living room intermingle for a spacious, connected main living space. In our Woods Out Back project, we extended this interconnected concept to include an outdoor living area off the kitchen. Folding walls melt into the wings for an uninterrupted view to the backyard.
Glass
From floor-to-ceiling to long strips of windows, glass dominates the main living areas. Natural light filters through and warms the often low-ceilinged homes. It’s also the cause of complaint in many historic modern homes, since these expansive windows decreased energy efficiency. Thankfully, our own contemporary technology has resolved this issue.
Chimney
This architectural design minimizes external ornamentation in favor of simplicity. The exception: chimneys. Often inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, modern chimneys lean large and are often comprised of brick or stone, adding additional texture and intrigue to an otherwise uncluttered design.
