We love the art of architecture. It allows us to seek beauty and craftsmanship every day. Better yet, it allows us to tell our clients’ stories through their homes. Several years ago, Bellevue architect Scott Hommas partnered with a homeowner to remodel a lakefront house. In their initial conversations, the homeowner shared his love of Asian art with Scott and expressed a desire to shape the home around his collection. Scott caught the vision and ran with it.
Scott drew on craftsman style architecture—a close cousin to Asian architecture—and designed a dream home that reflected his client’s unique personality. The result: a timeless, comfortable, livable museum. From the entry to the library, the custom home showcases his client’s art collection with grace and ease.
First Entrance
A specially crafted, elevated nook greets visitors at the entrance and displays an exquisite painted screen. Vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and upward sconces transport visitors from the Pacific Northwest to the Far East and frame the artistic treasure trove within the Seattle home.
Down the Stairs
A tansu hutch-inspired stairway parallels a tiered display case for three Asian sculptures. Small recessed lights illuminate the statues and offer an elegant, natural emphasis on the significance of art in the homeowner’s life.
In the Living Room
A pastoral Japanese painting adds splash of yellow to the living room. Rich, stained wood beams, posts, and cabinets subtly frame the painting, and orange and yellow throw pillows draw on its colors and tie the room together.
Throughout the Library
Asian Ambiance’s library brings books and art together in a warm, inviting space. Scott designed the room’s shelves for both art and function. Large spaces framed by bookshelves provide ample space for paintings and maps. Other shelves showcase sculpture and pottery, and the exquisite woodwork throughout is itself a masterpiece.
The Art of Architecture
Scott relished the opportunity to bond with his client over a love of art, and he used that common interest to design his client’s dream home. Asian Ambiance is the art of architecture in action—combining great design and a positive relationship to tell his client’s story.
