Going Gothic

Style is unique to each individual, and there’s a house design to suit every taste. Such variety and distinction is one of the reasons we love the art of architecture. Each home style reflects the personality of its occupants, and we relish the opportunity to walk with our clients through the design process. Sometimes, we watch their home style evolve as they discover their tastes and dreams more deeply. Other times, homeowners have long dreamed of a specific home design style. Such is the case with Curtis Gelotte’s Lakefront Gothic project.

Drawing from the Late Middle Ages, gothic style architecture embraces dramatic details. Curtis’s Lakefront Gothic house draws on the best of the medieval style—centered gables, exquisite stonework, and intricate ornamentation—while still offering all the comforts of modern design.

Centered Gables

Lakefront Gothic showcases artful symmetry from the first approach. Three soaring gables dominate the the Lake Washington home’s front exterior. The front door nests between the two far gables. A pointed arch—a classic feature of traditional gothic architecture—frames the doorway, casting an air of drama on the home. The roofline itself offers a balanced, picturesque image.

Stonework

Exquisite stonework adorns the soaring, fanciful exterior and turns the house into sculpture. Brick walls meet molded stone windows and dormers. A low-lying stone wall frames the Lake Washington home and draws the eye to the grand entrance complete with pointed arch doorway. Lighter stone blocks mark the peaks of each gable and frame each window and dormer.

Ornamentation

Gothic style revels in the Romantic and thus found a renewed appreciation in the nineteenth century. Much like the detailed masonry on the outside, inside, the home features sculpted, honeycombed ceilings, arched doorways, and decorative sconces. The office features gothic revival style wood panelling with candle-like sconces and chandelier. Dark wood creates an air of mystery about the room.
