Here’s how to work with your architect using a wish list when designing a home to create the living space you’ve always dreamed of:

  • Think big. Every project starts with possibility, so here’s your chance to go wild. Whether you’re building an entire home or just remodeling a room, think about what your dream space would have. From the big picture to the tiniest details, don’t overlook a thing. Make a list and compile an idea book with clips and images for inspiration; then give them both to your architect.
  • Narrow the scope. Once you’ve got your best-of-all-possible-worlds scenario, it’s time to start thinking practically. Consider constraints like budget, space, and lifestyle, and whittle your dream list down to the absolute essentials. What can’t you live without?
  • Let the architect work their magic. Clear communication with your architect is key. Confirm that your architect understands your desires, rather than pushing his or her own on you; then keep the conversation going as the architect creates plans and revises. This is called the “iterative” approach, and it should result in a plan that is exactly to your specifications.
